MEDRESE

Category: The local grape varieties

This is a local clone of Azerbaijan and widely spread in Yukhari Shirvan. The name of clone is taken from the word "medrese” – a Muslim religious school.
In 70-80s of XIX century, there were 50 thousand hectares of vineyard of this sort.
In early of the XX century this clone was brought to Genjebasar. Nowadays the area of this vineyard has notably decreased. Bushes grow normally and rapidly.
Leaves are palmate lobed and toothed. Flowers are self-pollinated. We have discovered functional female type flower variation too. Clusters are big, cone-shaped, and sometimes rare. The stalks of clusters get firm. The seeds are medium big, mainly round, covered with dark-blue wax layer. Languid is very juicy and a little bit slimy.
It's of medium ripening typical grape sort.
Full ripening of the seeds in Shamakhi is at the beginning of September, in Ganja – at the end of August. Productivity is normal. Quantity of glucose in south hill-sides of Shamakhi is 23-24 percent, in Ganja – 20-21 percent.
High quality table and dessert wines are made of Medrese. This wine is highly extractive. It is used in preparation of other kinds of wine by means of coupage.
