MORASTEL

Category: The local grape varieties

The homeland of this sort is Andeliz in Spain. Widely spread in France and Italy. Few bushes of it are cultivated in the South Crimea and Middle Asia. It was brought to Agricultural Experimental Enterprise Govlar-Sari of the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institution in 1969. Cultivated here more than 20 years.
Bushes grow rapidly.
Flowers are self-pollinated. Clusters are middle sized and enough big. Cylindrical cone-shaped and winged. The drops are tiny, round and dark blue. Skin is not thick, languid is juicy, and taste is ordinary.
It is late ripening grape sort. Dry and table wines made of it. It has 25-27 percent capacity of sugar productivity in hot places.

MOLET

Its homeland is in Sowua department of France. It was grown in small quantities in Europe in most collections, at the same time in the collection of "Govlar-Sari" Agricultural Experimental Enterprise of the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute.
Bushes are of medium size.
Flowers are self-pollinated. Cluster is medium cylindrical and cylindrical cone shaped. Seeds are small, round, medium, a little flat when full-ripen it is of amber color. Languid is juicy and fleshy. Taste is ordinary and pleasant.
It is late ripen grape sort. It is sensitive to gray decay and mildew. With medium productivity. It is well grown in carbonate and sandy soil. It can be suitable for making white, pure and enough alcoholic table wines.

MOLDOVA

Category: The local grape varieties

Moldova has been obtained by means of selection. Some other clone types including Vitis Labruska have been used for this purpose. Brought to the village of Chinarli in Shamkir, Azerbaijan, in 2002 by Fakhraddin Suleymanov.
Bushes grow rapidly.
Flowers are of functional female type. Clusters are big and very big, cylindrical, straight and thin cone shaped, dense. Seeds are big, oval, and a little longish, color is purple and dark blue when fully ripen. Skin is a bit thick but not firm. Languid is fleshy and juicy. Taste is ordinary, pleasant, medium sweet, fragrant with the odor of Izabella.
Medium and late ripening table sort. Resistant to freeze and Mildew.

MISQALI

It is a local sort of Azerbaijan. The word isqal is of Azeri origin and means measuring unit. But the Armenians pronounce it as Msxali.
Bushes grow rapidly.
Flowers are self-pollinated. Clusters are very long, cone-shaped or cylindrical, rare even very rare. Seeds are medium and large, slightly oval, pale green with dense wax layer, brown spots can be seen in sunshine. Skin is gentle and partly transparent. Taste is ordinary but pleasant.
Misqali is a universal sort. Productivity is high and stable.
Suitable to eat fresh and good for the production of table wines.

MELEYI

Category: The local grape varieties

It is the local clone of Nakhcivan. There is a similar clone type in Turkmenistan. The main difference between them is the color of seeds. Turkmenistan's Malayi is greenish grey. We give the description of Nakhcivan Meleyi.
Bushes grow with medium rapid.
Flowers are self-pollinated. Clusters are medium-large, cone-shaped, winged and medium-dense. Seeds are medium-large, round, dark blue and have dense wax layers. The denseness of wax layer increases the quality of blue color. Skin is thick but elastic. Languid is fleshy, juicy and juice is transparent. The taste is ordinary, pleasant with good flavor.
It is medium late ripening type. Productive, sugar is 19-20 percent.
From this clone, dark colored table and dessert wines are produced.

MEDRESE

Category: The local grape varieties

This is a local clone of Azerbaijan and widely spread in Yukhari Shirvan. The name of clone is taken from the word "medrese” – a Muslim religious school.
In 70-80s of XIX century, there were 50 thousand hectares of vineyard of this sort.
In early of the XX century this clone was brought to Genjebasar. Nowadays the area of this vineyard has notably decreased. Bushes grow normally and rapidly.
Leaves are palmate lobed and toothed. Flowers are self-pollinated. We have discovered functional female type flower variation too. Clusters are big, cone-shaped, and sometimes rare. The stalks of clusters get firm. The seeds are medium big, mainly round, covered with dark-blue wax layer. Languid is very juicy and a little bit slimy.
It's of medium ripening typical grape sort.
Full ripening of the seeds in Shamakhi is at the beginning of September, in Ganja – at the end of August. Productivity is normal. Quantity of glucose in south hill-sides of Shamakhi is 23-24 percent, in Ganja – 20-21 percent.
High quality table and dessert wines are made of Medrese. This wine is highly extractive. It is used in preparation of other kinds of wine by means of coupage.

MERLO

It comes from southwest France. Widespread sort. It is cultivated in most countries of Europe. There are many plantations in the Ukraine, Moldova, Crimea, Krasnodar, Stavropol and Georgia. It has been in the vine collections of Azerbaijan. Merlo vineyards were planted more than 10 hectares in Ganja-2 Open Stock Society in 2005.
Bushes are strong. Flowers are self-pollinated.
Clusters are medium large, cone shaped, paddy and winged. Seeds are medium large, round and dark blue. Skin is medium and elastic. Languid is fleshy and juicy. Taste is aromatic, harmonious and fresh.
It is normal ripening grape sort and considered to be a universal sort.

MAGARACH EARLY RIPENED

Category: The local grape varieties

It is a selection sort of All-Union Scientific Research Winegrowing and Winemaking Institute (Yalta). It was received from cross pollination of Madlen Anjev and Gara Kishmishi grape clones in 1928. It is grown in the Ukraine, Moldova, Krasnodar, Rostov provinces of Russia and in some Middle Asia republics and Far East. It was brought to Azerbaijan to Ashagi Gushchu village of Tovuz region in 70s of the last century and has been grown in the area of more than 10 acres.
Bushes are strong, flowers are self-pollinated.
Cluster is very big, cone shaped, rare and thick. Seeds are big, round, sometimes a little bit oval and black. Languid is juicy, crispy, has a taste of chocolate. The thick wax layer gives a special beauty to the clone.
It is early ripening table grape. In Yalta, it is ripens the first decade of August, in Tovuz at the end of July. Productivity is high and constant. Sugar level is 18 percent, shippable.

BASTARDO OF MAGARACH

The sort was gained as a result of cross pollination of the Bastardo of Magarac and Saperavi clones in All-Union Scientific Research Winegrowing and Winemaking Institute (Yalta) and recommended to be grown in the Crimea and in south of Ukraine.
Bushes grow with medium rapid but strong. Have self-pollinating flowers.
Cluster is medium, cylindrical cone shaped or cone shaped, medium dense. Seeds are medium or little, oval or egg shaped; dark blue, wax layer is thick. Skin is gentle not firm. Languid is slippery, juicy. Taste is ordinary, sweet. Juice is transparent. It is middle ripening wine sort.
Its productivity is more than Bastardo and Saperavi clones in Maaac. Productivity is 120-150 centners from hectare; medium weight of every cluster is 150-200 gram. Sugar level is 26-29 percent if seeds are fully ripen.
It is useful for high qualitative dessert and strong wines.
The wines produced in south and lowland Crimea are not less productive than high qualitative wines and less productive Bastardo.

LIDIYA

Category: The local grape varieties

This sort is popular with names Pink Lidiyda, Pink Izabella and Red Izabella too.
According to P.Viala, it is selected from seeds of Labrushka V. In 1907, it was brought to the Ukraine. In 1961, the sort was brought to Tartar region from Kakhovka (Ukraine) and in 1991 to Ganja Grape-trading LTD. At the moment, about 15 bushes are planted in that vinyard. But as it is seen from scientific sources, it was brought to Azerbaijan in XIX century, and in 1912, it was taken to Russia for planting. The place of planting isn't shown.
This sort is cultivated in great majority of countries.
It grows rapidly. Flowers are self-pollinated. Clusters are tiny, of medium bigness, cylindrical, cylindrical cone shaped, winged, sometimes dense. Seed stalk is tender, gentle, easily broken. Seeds are of medium bigness, round, dark-red, brown red in the middle part, when bush is weak it grows weak red in the green background, and there is purple wax layer over it. Languid is mucous. It has strawberry taste, the quantity of sugar and acidity is in harmony. It is middle late ripening. It has got a great ability of sugar gathering. It is useful for making wines of portvein type. In Ukraine, they produce portvein Lidiya of this type.
