MARANDI OF SHAMAKHI

Category: The local grape varieties

It is one of the valuable clones of Azerbaijan grapes. There weren't separate vineyards growing this clone before. A number of Marandies have been cultivated with this name as - Ari Marandi, Et (Fleshy) Marandi, Gulu (Flower) Marandi, arandi of Agdam (or crispy) and so on. The origin of marandies is in Marand region of Iran though this fact hasn't been testified in any sources.
They grow Marandi clones mainly in Agdam and Shamakhi, very little in Goychay and Ismayilli. They have been planted as genealogical foundation in the experimental stations of Azerbaijan Scientific-Research Winegrowing and Winemaking Institute and in some other branching households.
In 1969, this clone was cultivated in the experimental household of the Academy of Agriculture. The clone has made a great progress there. In 1990, they took 240 plants to cultivate in Grape-rading LĔ and planted them in three rows. Its differentiated agrotechnics have been developed since then.
Bushes are of strong growth. Flowers are self-pollinated. Clusters are large and extra-large, wide- cone shaped, seldom cone-shaped, branchy from the stem, and dense. Seeds are big, egg-shaped, or oval-egg shaped, dark red or dark green, dark red when fully ripen. Skin is thick, tough and covered with dense wax layer. Languid is fleshy, crunchy and juice is colorless. Taste is ordinary but pleasant and harmonious.
It is a table grape of very late ripening. It ripens in early October in Ganja vineyards.
Productivity is high. Can be well preserved, and is shippable.

SULTANI

Sultani is one of rare sorts with thick furry leaves. It's cultivated mainly in Uzbekistan and in neighboring countries.
It has been developed in winemaking and winegrowing experimental stations of Ganja in Azerbaijan and "Ingilab” sovkhoz of Khachmaz region.
The bushes are strong.
Flowers get pollinated by themselves. Clusters are big, cone-shaped, short padded, and thick. Seeds are big, greenish-white and yellow in the sun. Skin is thick and rough. Languid is firm and crunchy.
Sultani is typical late ripening table sort. It has high productivity. Seeds crack when there is little wetness in the soil and air.
It contains 16-20 percent of sugar.

SEZAR

Category: The local grape varieties

It was cultivated in Yonnne province of France but origin is unknown. Not widely-spread. It is not known where it was brought from to Novocherkassk either. In 1969, it was brought to the Enterprise "Govlar-Sari” of the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute.
Bushes are medium strong.
Flowers are self-pollinating. Cluster is medium-large, round, blackish red. The wax layer is so thick that seeds look gray. Skin is thick but elastic. Languid is fleshy-juicy. Taste is ordinary, pleasant and with the odor of fruits. Sensitive to wind and fungal diseases of plants.
Medium late-ripening sort.
They produce table wines from this sort with the taste of sour cherry.

SERVANIN

It was found in Izer department of France. Brought from Novocherkassk to the enterprise Govlar-Sari of the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute in 1969.
Bushes are strong.
Flowers are self-pollinating. Clusters are medium large, cylindrical and cone-cylindrical. Seeds are little, round, yellowish white, pale pink in sunshine. Languid is ordinary, pleasant and fresh. Seeds are ripening equally.
Distinguish with high productivity.
It is sensitive to Mildew, less sensitive to parasitic fungus of plants.
Late ripening grape sort. Seeds are dark hay colored, pure and strong wines are produced.

SAPERAVI

Category: The local grape varieties

Since old times, it has been a widespread red clone of Georgia. It is in the fourth place after Rkasiteli, Solikouri and Siska. Clone is mainly cultivated in Kakhet (Cahetia) region of Georgia and became popular in the world for its Kakhet wine. There have been industrial vineyards in western part of Azerbaijan. There are 200 ha of vineyards in the "Agro Azerinvest LTD” farm in Khanlar district.
It has medium growth.
The flowers are self-pollinated. Cluster is medium large and big wide cone shaped winged and rare. Seeds are medium large, round and covered with thick wax layer. Skin is medium thick, languid is smooth, juicy, and taste is ordinary but very sugary and fresh. It is the clone of late ripening grape, sugar percent is 25-28.

RUSEED DAYZE

Its homeland is Soan department of France. This type is widely spread in the European countries. Brought to Azerbaijan from Novocherkassk.
Bushes are strong.
Flowers are self-pollinated. Clusters are tiny and of medium bigness and ellipse-shaped.
Seeds are tiny, medium and round and dimpled in the tip and in the color of amber. Languid is fleshy and juicy, taste is simple and fresh. It is late ripening grape sort.
It is sensitive to gray decomposing and mildew. It grows well in nut-brown soil and is very fruitful. It is of medium quality and used in the preparation of less sweet-smelling table wines and other wines.

RKASITELI

Category: The local grape varieties

It is a centuries-old clone of Georgia. Nearly 20-30 percent of Georgia's vineyards consist of this clone. It occupied the first place in the vineyards of former USSR. Most of Azerbaijan (nearly 30 percent of vineyards) vineyards consisted of this clone in the past and nowadays.
In the irrigated fertile lands the bushes of this type are strong and their fruitfulness is high.
Flowers are self-pollinated. Clusters are of medium size, longish, cylindrical or a little big widened from its stem, usually winged, medium thick and dense.
Seeds are of medium bigness, slightly oval, greenish white and its yellowish with brown lines in the sun; it becomes slightly pink spotted when it is fully ripen. Skin is of medium-thickness, enough tough. Languid is smooth and juicy. Taste is ordinary, with rich content, fresh and harmonious.
Rkasitelli is long-ripen sort. It has a great ability of sugar gathering. It is very sensitive to drought. It is almost durable to phylloxero.

RISH BABA

It is an ancient Dagestan clone. It is spread in all regions of Dagestan and in several regions of Azerbaijani. It is grown in small collections of Salyan, Absheron, Agdam, Goychay, Ganja, Shamkir districts. There are more than hundred plants in Ganja grape trading LTD.
Bushes are strong. Flowers are self-pollinated. But shedding of the flowers are 80 percent.
As to Lazarevski's writing its cluster is small, but they are large in every places of Azerbaijan. Small clusters can be observed on grapevines grown in wet and not fertile soil. It is very rare. Rareness depends on shedding of flowers. Cluster is wide conical and with burdocks. Stem is very weak. Seeds are large, long and oval. Its color can be seen pink in the faded green background.
Skin is pasted to the languid. Languid is tough, crunchy and a little bit juicy. Taste and juice is normal. Rishbaba is a typical table grape. In Azerbaijan, it ripens at the end of September.

RISLING

Category: The local grape varieties

Its homeland is the valley of Rhine of Germany. Wines produced in Rhine and Mozel became popular in the world according to their quality. Bushes grow medium strong.
Flowers are pollinated by themselves. Cluster is small and medium, sometimes very small, cylindrical, wide cone shaped, very winged, thick and rare. Seeds are small, round, light green with white nuances and if it is overgrown it becomes red brown and white wax layer is clearly seen. Skin is thick, half pure. Languid is fluent, juicy, sugar and high. Sourness is geentle.
High qualified table wines and champagne is produced from Risling.

PORTAN N

Its homeland is Bordo department of France. Not widely spread. It is spread in western European countries, in the Ukraine, the Crimea, Novocherkass, Krasnodar. It is brought to Govlar-Sari of the Azerbaijan Agricultural Institute from Novocherkassk.
Bushes are strong.
Flowers are self-pollinated. Cluster is medium large, cone shaped, sometimes equal winged and thick. Seed is medium large, round, blackish dark red. Skin is medium and firm. Languid is fleshy and juicy, a little smoothing weak colored and with lovely fragrance.
It is an early ripening grape sort.
Red table wines are produced. Wines from this sort are early ripening and gradually faded. It is sensitive to diseases of oidium but tolerant to rotting.
